Small Changes To Your Workspace That Will Bring Huge Results

As church leaders, we spend a lot of time sitting at our desk.

This area can be where the true magic happens as God gives us vision, direction, and that next great sermon idea.

But it can also be where we feel anxiety and stress the most.

We can’t find that one document we need at the moment…

The receipt we need is “lost in time” under a book, notepad, or dirty coffee mug …

The sermon we printed out is now nowhere to be found …

Can you relate?

If so, know we’ve all been there.

But I believe that with a couple of small changes, your workspace can turn from a maze of obstacles to a place that brings joy and productivity.

Here are two small things to your workspace that will bring huge results:

1. Organizing Your Desk

I can still remember my desk at my first ministry position.

To say I was unorganized would be the understatement of the year!

My filing system was stacks of papers, each at least an inch high, sitting across my desk.

No one knew where anything was except me, and even I had to search for “the lost treasure” sometimes.

I can remember the overwhelming stress and anxiety that would come over me from looking at the piles.

I was literally inside “Mount Paper Everest.”

Finally, after realizing I couldn’t take it any longer, I took a whole day to organize, trash, and find a place for everything to go.

Afterward, something amazing happened.

With a neat and clean workspace, I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.

I also saw my productivity grow by leaps and bounds!

In the following weeks, I learned an important leadership principle:

“A leader is only as organized and productive as his/her workspace.”

2. Organizing Your Mobile Desk

Just like the physical desk we work at, all church leaders have mobile desks as well.

What are they?

They are our devices: phones, tablets, and computers.

Just like an unorganized physical desk can bring on feelings of stress and anxiety, our mobile desks can do the same.

Here are some examples:

Have you ever looked at your computer home screen for ten minutes trying to find the one file you need?

Or have you swiped repeatedly through your device, looking for the right app to use?

If so, your mobile desk is wreaking havoc on your mind and productivity.

It doesn’t matter how organized your workspace looks if the one area you work in the most looks like a junk drawer.

But how do we fix this?

Take a couple of hours and organize your mobile desk by creating a folder for every file to live in. (No Exceptions)

After doing this, put those folders in your “documents folder.”

This will leave your home screen looking clean and refreshed.

Call to Action

All church leaders would love more time to get things done.

I believe organizing your workspace can be the lifeline you need.

If you agree, schedule a day this week to make it happen.

What Do You Think?

What about you?

Do you have another tip I didn’t mention?
